It’s 95 degrees in Mission Viejo, your air conditioner is running, and the house just won’t cool down. Before you panic (or pay for anything), here are the most common reasons an AC stops cooling in Orange County — what you can safely check yourself, and when it’s time to call a pro.
First, the easy things to check yourself
- Thermostat. Make sure it’s set to Cool and the temperature is set below the current room temp. Try fresh batteries.
- Air filter. A clogged filter is the #1 cause of weak cooling. If it’s gray and dusty, replace it — then give the system 30 minutes.
- Circuit breaker. Check that the breaker for the AC hasn’t tripped. If it trips again right after resetting, stop and call us — that’s an electrical issue.
- Outdoor unit. Make sure the condenser outside is running and isn’t blocked by leaves, dirt, or overgrown plants. Gently hose off debris (power off first).
- Vents. Confirm supply vents are open and return vents aren’t blocked by furniture.

Low refrigerant (a leak)

Frozen evaporator coil
Ironically, an AC can freeze up. Low airflow (dirty filter/coil) or low refrigerant causes ice on the indoor coil, and a frozen coil can’t cool. If you see ice, turn the system off and call us before it damages the compressor.

These inexpensive electrical parts start and run the motors. When they fail, the outdoor fan or compressor may not run — you’ll hear a hum or clicking but get little cooling. A common, affordable fix.
